Ivybridge' s leading health and fitness expert Claire Morgan-Hughes warns us we need to change our bad lifestyle habits if we want to avoid getting Type 2 Diabetes.

From Sunday June the 9th until Saturday the 15th it is National Diabetes Week, founded by Diabetes UK, which has been at the forefront of pioneering research to help people with diabetes for more than 75 years.

Claire says, “Diabetes is on the rise in this country and it’s so frustrating because it CAN be prevent or managed if you already have the condition.

“Simple diet changes like using fresh produce and taking regular exercise can massively reduce your risk.”

“I don’t think people realise the risks they are taking, Diabetics are two to four times higher at risk of dying from heart disease or strokes as Non-Diabetics.

“In the USA more than half of the amputations done are because of Diabetes and I don’t think it will be long until we have the same issue in our country,” adds Claire

Celebrities are also getting involved, Phillip Schofield, whose mother and brother have Type 1 Diabetes, is lending his voice to help raise awareness

Phillip says: “As someone who knows first-hand what it’s like when someone close to you is diagnosed, I have experienced the shock, fear and anguish the condition can bring. Not just for the person affected, but to the whole family.”

“That’s why it’s vital that Diabetes UK gets the continued support so they can continue to carry out vital research and make important breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of diabetes –I’ll be supporting Diabetes Week this year; I hope you’ll do the same.”
