Millbrook Village, the retirement community operated by Inspired Villages, is redefining what it means to retire. With a focus on wellbeing, first-class facilities and a high quality of life, Millbrook has shifted the focus from ‘slowing down’ to ‘a new lease of life’.

Situated on the edge of Exeter, Millbrook Village combines the beauty of a secluded countryside haven with the community spirit of a local village. Upon visiting, you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a holiday retreat; thanks to a hospitality-led offering, residents can enjoy everything from a relaxation pool to a fine dining restaurant.

Leah Jackson, a dedicated wellness navigator, is responsible for supporting the requirements and interests of residents. She comments: “At Millbrook Village, we do everything possible to facilitate the highest quality of life. With a host of facilities and an inclusive programme of social activities and events, we enable residents to live the best years of their lives. Whether you’ve got a penchant for cycling, Pilates or choir singing, there is something here for every interest.”

Indeed, the on-site facilities alone are enough to keep anyone occupied. Perfect for body and mind, they include a relaxation pool, a fine dining restaurant with an award-winning chef, a gym and studio, a library, a private cinema, and a concierge service. Whether it’s clinking glasses over a freshly prepared meal or treating the grandkids to their favourite film on the big screen, residents can enjoy a VIP lifestyle right on their doorstep.

Prospective residents can choose from a host of stylish homes and apartments, with a variety of layouts to suit their preferences. Each home boasts contemporary interior design, with nods to an elegant English countryside aesthetic to complement the picturesque rural location. With views of impeccably landscaped grounds and incredible facilities just a stone’s throw away, residents can indulge in an atmosphere of effortless style and attention to detail.

Millbrook Village is designed to maximise wellbeing, from the central clubhouse, which is the ‘social hub’ of the village, to a comprehensive range of activities and events. Leah comments: “No matter what your individual requirements are, we’re able to tailor everything to your needs. Whether it’s a hobby you’ve always wanted to try your hand at, or joining an aqua aerobics class, we’re here to listen, support and to make that happen.”

When the coronavirus pandemic spread to the UK, Millbrook Village was faced with a unique challenge. How to respond to stringent measures whilst still fostering an atmosphere of independence, community and healthy wellbeing?

Leah recalls: “The pandemic brought about many restrictions to public movement. Our main concern was how we could help residents stay connected and remain active whilst keeping everyone safe and well.

“From online Pilates classes to a pop-up shop with all the essentials people were struggling to find in supermarkets, which we deliver to residents’ doorsteps, we are offering a variety of services to maintain the high standard of living for which Millbrook is renowned. Having a video catch-up with a G&T in hand is also proving to be a popular alternative to popping to the neighbour’s house!”

Socially distanced activities are, of course, helped by the spacious village grounds; meanwhile the fact each home at Millbrook Village is 1,000 sq ft on average helps residents feel comfortable staying in.

“Due to our close-knit on-site community and support network, we were able to tackle the challenge really effectively – the village team really pulled together to support the residents, who were really understanding of why we were introducing the safety measures we did,” adds Leah.

“If anything, lockdown highlighted just how much Millbrook Village can cater to our residents’ needs without needing to leave the grounds. As the country eases back to normality, it is incredible to see the reinforced sense of community spirit.”
