Totnes natives Keely and Alan Carter share their excitement at landing contracts with some of the biggest names in fashion.

Though Keely and Alan were no strangers to running their own business, starting their own perfumery was daunting nonetheless, given their lack of experience in the field; For the last two years Id dreamt of starting my own perfumery, but I never had the gutsI knew it would be a challenge but I had to try commented Keely. The Carters eventually overcame their reservations, with Keely citing her twin sister as one of the greatest inspirations for their eventual change of heart; her passion definitely motivated meshe was always so enamoured with her own business, I wanted to share her passion. Though they knew the difficulties that lay ahead, the Carters were determined to go for it, and soon set about the task of securing connections with some of the worlds most sought after designers.

Meanwhile, the hunt was on for a designer capable of transforming the Carters humble business in to a boutique fit for the fashionable elite. Who could they turn to turn to bring their vision to life? As Keely recalls, it was when they came across David Strickland at Resolution Interiors that they knew they had found a designer capable of making their dreams a reality; Resolution boasted an array of highly esteemed clientele including Virgin and Molton Browns but when we saw their designs, we knew they were for us! Despite the cost, the Carters knew that the work was well worth the cost; as you can see from the finished store we spared no expense!

Although it took almost a year to convince big name brands such as D&G, Gucci and Dior to invest in their store, the Carters were nonetheless overwhelmed when the distinguished designers gave them the green light; brands like this dont often invest in independent businesses like ours so we cant believe how far weve come. However, in addition to these illustrious brands, the Carters have now succeeded in securing contracts with star clients such as Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Geurlain, Hermes and Roger and Gallet and are looking to secure deals with more big-name brands in the future.

Furthermore, the shop was recently featured as a location for Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders new TV series who chose the boutique whilst filming on location in Devon. According to Keely they used the sitting area at the back of our shop to do makeup, whilst filming in the side corridor, it was all very exciting! However, the biggest surprise came when the stars asked if Keely would reopen the store for an impromptu shopping spree: Dawn mentioned to Jen what a lovely shop we had before asking whether they could do a bit of shopping when they were done filming for the series, which will be televised in November.

Keely and Alan are looking forward to an exciting New Year, and hope that next year will be as amazing as this one. For more information about their business, please visit facebook.com/totnesperfumery
