Two talented women from the same Devon village are preparing to go head-to-head in a national competition to find the ‘Up and Coming Artist’ of 2014.

Jackie Gale and Cheri Hunston, who both live in Yealmpton, are finalists in the Fine Art Trade Guild exhibition and awards, which take place in London this Saturday (May 17).

Textile artist Jackie and ink illustrator Cheri, both 44, are among six finalists in their category to find the Guild’s Up and Coming Published Artist of 2014.

Not only are Jackie and Cheri the same age and live in the same village but they are also close friends.

Cheri said: “It was a shock when we both got shortlisted, but we’re friends and support one another. We are looking forward to travelling up to London together. Jackie is great fun and I’m sure we will have a great time.

“At the end of the day we are both self-employed women trying to make a living in the art business and it’s very difficult: it’s great to have someone like Jackie to bounce ideas off and share parts of the journey with. If she wins then I won’t be jealous, I will be very happy for her.”

Cheri uses mostly ink to create detailed paintings of animals and fantasy characters, each one taking anything from 42 to 350 hours to complete.

Dubbed the ‘Material Girl’, Jackie recycles fabrics into colourful artwork giving textiles a new lease of life with a contemporary twist. Her creations include land and seascapes to her popular ‘cow family’.

Jackie said: “I’m not surprised that Cheri is a finalist as she’s an incredibly talented artist - it’s just a crazy coincidence that we are from the same village and shortlisted for the same award. We have become good friends over the past year and are genuinely delighted for each other and, of course, very proud to be representing Devon at such a prestigious event.”

Jackie is also nominated in the Art Business Website Award 2014 category alongside Artframe Solution – the Cattedown-based art framing studio where both women exhibit.

Jackie will be staging her first solo exhibition at Devonport Guildhall from June 7-26. Both artists will exhibit at Artframe Solutions where they are based during the Devon Open Studios form September 16-21.
