All the excitement of Wimbledon Finals Weekend is coming to Plymouths BBC Big Screen on the Piazza this weekend, with some great interactive sports and classic tennis highlights.
Plymouth is one of just three Big Screen cities that will be warming up to the Mens and Ladies finals by creating their own Centre Court experience in association with the Lawn Tennis Association and the BBC, which will include mini tennis courts, a fastest serve game and strawberries & cream. Plus, you will be able to relive some of the greatest Wimbledon finals of the past, including highlights from the 2008 Nadal v Federer Mens final and the 1977 Womens final between Virginia Wade and Bettie Stove. The morning sessions on the Piazza will be hosted by BBC Spotlight's Natalie Cornah.
The Big Screen will be showing classic match highlights between 10am and 1pm on both Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July before switching to live coverage of the Mens and Ladies finals from 1pm onwards.
"We are trying to create a sense of excitement for those people who can't make it to Wimbledon by bringing a variety of tennis related activities to the city centre," said Big Screen producer Kevin Heathorn. "All the taster sessions are free of charge - so it's a great way to find out whether you're a budding Roger Federer or Serena Williams. We've also dusted off some of the great matches from the past to get you in the mood ahead of this year's finals."
Plymouth has been hosting Wimbledon coverage in the city centre for seven years. This ever popular event is part of the Summer Festival (www.psf2011.com) which sees a programme of summer screenings on the Piazza bringing a mix of sports, opera and classic movies to the City Centre.
Clint Jones, Plymouth City Centre Manager said: Our Wimbledon coverage in the city centre proves to be increasingly popular every year. As well as showing the live action on the Big Screen we also provide seating and free entertainment during the course of the fortnight. Unless you have a tournament ticket, this is the closest you will get to the Wimbledon experience so make sure you come along and catch a match or two.
Leader of Plymouth City Council, Vivien Pengelly added: The screening of Wimbledon has become a key event in the Summer Festival and a firm favourite with visitors to the city centre. Its always lovely to see everyone gather in the sunshine to enjoy the tennis, not to mention strawberries and cream and a nice refreshing drink.
The BBC Big Screen is featuring a range of events as part of the Summer Festival 2011, including The Formula One British Grand Prix, performances from the Royal Opera House and a series of classic Disney films including The Jungle Book, Tangled and Finding Nemo.
