Managing Director Keith White, who runs the business with co-directors Adam Spiers, Stephen Spiers and Michael Cox, said:
We have had directors from Rolex and designers from Switzerland here and they were blown away.
They said we could pick this shop up and put it in Bond Street and it wouldnt be out of place.
Invited guests including customers, friends and civic dignitaries were invited to an evening event (Thursday 17 November) to see the finished result, many for the first time. The consensus amongst the guests is that the expansion and refit has been a resounding success.
Chris Tanner of Tanners Restaurant provided delicious canapes and champagne for the evening.
He said: We have a long association with Michael Spiers, going back over 13 years, and Ive catered for several events at the Plymouth premises. Walking in for the first time, its clear that they have changed the whole concept of the retail space.
I think its tremendous that a local, successful, established family business has taken the chance to invest in the product and service that they believe in. This is very good for the city. Plymouth is already on the map, this can only raise its profile further.
Lord and Lady Mayoress Cllr Peter Brookshaw and Mrs Brenda Brookshaw came straight from switching on Plymouth's Christmas lights and stepped into another glittering environment.
World class, said Cllr Brookshaw. This goes beyond refurbishment and sets a standard for everyone to follow. It does Plymouth proud as Michael Spiers has always done.
Ive known the family for 50 years, we had children in the same school. Im so grateful to the generosity that the family has shown to people less fortunate, especially in the field of supporting and sponsoring sports for young men and women, and for their loyalty to Plymouth and the south west which is proved beyond doubt by this investment.
Mrs Brookshaw was equally impressed. She said Its such a relaxing and comfortable environment, and it sets off the jewellery and watches to the very best advantage. Michael Spiers has pitched this just right.
Sally Baum is co-owner Jolly Jacks Restaurant at Mayflower Marina, twice nominated for Restaurant of the Year in Devon Life's Food Awards.
She said: Its absolutely lovely, theyve created the perfect space to show and sell the best of the best.
Ben Wilson is General Manager of Tanners Restaurant.
He said: Theyve completely transformed the premises, its spectacular. Im impressed by the attention to detail, especially the small touches like a games console on the mezzanine to keep children entertained so that their parents can relax while they make their purchases. Thats very considerate.
Paul Keen of Plymouth Auction Rooms is a huge fan of hand crafted Swiss watches, and was keen to see the watch gallery.
He said: I think Michael Spiers has created a fabulous shop which showcases their fine selection of some of the worlds leading watch brands. The luxurious interior is of the highest quality and the perfect environment for clients. This is great for Plymouth!"
The last word goes to Clint Jones, Plymouth's City Centre Manager.
People who say that high end retail can only be found in Exeter should come to Cornwall Street, because its here!
Its absolutely fantastic that a local company should invest so much time, thought and money in the city centre. Its a huge vote of confidence."
Michael Spiers is at 54 Cornwall Street, Plymouth.
