Alan Chambers, the polar explorer who is accustomed to temperatures of minus 65 degrees, got a warm reception as guest of honour for the annual prize-giving at St Peters School in Lympstone.


Chambers, who received the MBE for Determined leadership in constant adversity, told a packed marquee of pupils and their parents - that making mistakes was not only permissible but an essential part of the learning process.


The man who motivated Englands rugby World Cup winners in 2003 and our Ashes cricketers in 2005, spoke from personal experience, telling how his first North Pole trip had ended in failure, but how he had succeeded second time round after five years planning.


On the subject of success, St Peters looked back on a hugely successful year, having won a record number of scholarships -
