Since being granted its Market Charter by Henry III on December 28th 1257 the town of Honiton has boasted its street market.

The modern day market is run by the Honiton Street Market Company on behalf of the Town Council. The market brings a vibrancy to the town; with the market traders plying their ware’s alongside the many independent shops that line the High Street. All manners of goods can be browsed over and purchased from household goods, flowers, fruit and veg, to curiosities, gifts and much more. The market is popular both on a Tuesday and Saturday and is run all year round, with a smaller market held on a Thursday. Honiton’s friendly, welcoming and atmosphere provides a relaxing shopping experience for all. It also offers the visitor a wide variety with its many independent shops, cafés and bars. Honiton often called the gateway to the Southwest is ideally located with its good rail and road links Honiton has plenty to offer for everyone to enjoy.

Two special events take place in July the first being the Hot Pennies ceremony heralding the start of Honiton Fair week normally held on a Tuesday although the date may change from year to year. The event starts with a procession led by the town mayor and town crier along the High Street stopping off at various locations to allow hot (warm) pennies to be thrown from balconies to the crowd below. The second event is Charter Day held on a Saturday to celebrate the town being granted the charter to hold a market. Along with the usual market traders many charities are given the opportunity to have stalls and other street activities to raise money for their respective organisation.
