Runners in Devon are being offered a chance to take part in this years Virgin London Marathon in return for raising funds for St John Ambulance.

The charity has a few remaining guaranteed Gold Bond places available for the 2012 event that will take place on 22 April.

Runners need to pay a 100 deposit and pledge to raise a minimum of 1,625 for the charity.

St John Ambulance has a long association with the London Marathon. For 30 years, the charitys volunteers have been on hand along the 26.2 mile route and at first aid posts to help runners and supporters who may need first aid.

Over the last 10 years, people taking part in the annual race around the capital have raised 2.4 million by running on behalf of St John Ambulance.

Andrew Pratt, Fundraiser for St John Ambulance in Devon, said: The Virgin London Marathon is one of the most exciting and impressive sporting events of the year and is always oversubscribed.

A Gold Bond is a guaranteed place so you get to take part in this amazing event and raise funds for a very worthwhile cause.

Recent research has shown that over 150,000 die every year in situations where first aid could have given them a chance to live. We believe this figure to be unacceptable; no one should die because they needed first aid and didnt get it. This is why St John Ambulance teach life saving first aid skills to as many people as possible in the community, for the workplace and to young people and why our dedicated volunteers practise first aid.

By raising sponsorship money for St John Ambulance in the London Marathon 2012, you can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved, added Andrew.

In return for running for St John Ambulance, runners are offered an excellent support package including a running vest or t-shirt, extensive fundraising and training information, great prizes for the top fundraisers and a fantastic post-race reception where they can get a well deserved massage and food and drink.
