Cornish Interiors breathes new life into a National Trust restaurant in Devon

Cornish Interiors has recently completed the revamp of the National Trust restaurant at Buckland Abbey Garden & Estate near Yelverton in Devon. The brief was to bring this space into the 21st century with more colour and a fresh, new feel.

The restaurant was originally designed back in the early 1980s; it offered a canteen style service in an environment that was designed very much to reflect the monastic heritage of this property. The new design needed to move away from this and link more with the land, highlighting the estates sustainable ethos, where produce comes fresh from the local area.

Cornish Interiors Company Director, Cathryn Bishop said: We took inspiration from the building's stonework and chose orange, duck egg blue and slate grey for the new chairs. The solid wood floor was sanded down giving it a new lease of life and volunteers donated their photos of the Estate which we framed in old apple crates to liven up the walls. Visitors to the Abbey had also created some stunning felts which now hang in the family room of the restaurant, adding wonderful splashes of colour as well as telling a bit about the history of Buckland.

The finished product is a clean, light and welcoming space that connects with the estates beautiful natural surroundings.

Buckland Abbeys property manager, Jez McDermott commented; The restaurant feels more spacious, even though it actually accommodates 20% more covers. It takes maximum commercial advantage of the space available to us and provides a relaxing environment for our customers to enjoy. The design fits the original brief perfectly and the feedback were getting from our visitors has been fantastic. We are all absolutely delighted with the outcome.

The restaurant at Buckland Abbey Garden & Estate is open all week from 10:30am 5:30pm for lunch and afternoon teas. For more information please visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/buckland-abbey
