Lyneham Coombe is a brand-new timber and glass eco-house, which not only offers supreme comfort and privacy, but a sustainable lifestyle too
Lyneham Coombe combines luxurious accommodation and finishes with low-impact building technology. It occupies a wonderful woodland setting in the Teign valley.
It was Swedish architect, philosopher and environmentalist Bengt Warne who first identified the site and orientation for the house, and Dartington architect Richard Webster worked these ideas into his design.
The five-bedroom house is constructed from timber to reflect its idyllic setting, combining glulam timber frame, cedar cladding and shingle roof to dramatic effect.
No copper or lead products have been used, the site's natural water was brought into the house and a rainwater-harvesting system installed.
There is around 350 sq m of accommodation over two floors. On the first floor is the open-plan living area and the master suite. The rest of the accommodation and garage is at ground level.
The interior has a crisp modern feel, with the use of monochrome finishes which complement and contrast with each other and the 'natural' finish of the exposed timber frame. Walnut, limestone and terrazzo are used throughout.
The crucifix form of the building allows views through the trees in all directions.
Formerly run as a plant nursery for Devon violets, rhododendrons and camellias, Lyneham Coombe occupies a magical setting at the end of a private drive in the centre of its own land. With an abundance of oak, ash and beech trees, it is a haven for wildlife. The main lawn borders a small stream which runs to the River Teign. A small footbridge leads to an additional lawned area divided by a stream. There is a new timber-clad summerhouse on the upper lawn.
The house is three miles from Chudleigh, with its excellent facilities. Exeter is 12 miles away and the M5 motorway is easily accessible. For the outdoor enthusiast, Dartmoor is close by. The property
