A family home for 900 years, Kelly House is now taking paying guests

Kelly House near Tavistock has been home to the Kelly family for over 900 years, which means that the latest generation of Kellys may be the longest surviving family living in the same home in the country. The estate developed from an ancient clearing in a wood, and the existing house was built in 1742 adjacent to the Tudor hall it surmounted.

Now, for the first time, the Georgian house is opening to paying guests, with three magnificent en suite bedrooms providing a luxurious retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in a quiet rural corner of the countryside.

Each room has its own unique character, from the original master bedroom with its four-poster, king-sized bed, to the hidden wardrobes and ancient walls in the panelled room. Warin Kelly, the current squire, was keen to preserve every aspect of the existing fabric of the house to ensure the home remains unspoiled.

The rooms all have under-carpet heating to provide the warmth needed through the colder months, and breakfasts are served in the family dining room, the heart of the home. With guests having access to the classically decorated drawing room and gardens, the family are still very much in evidence.

Sophia Kelly, daughter of the current incumbent, gives the reasons for the latest developments in the halls of her ancestors: We love this old house. It has plenty of character, and many of our guests have commented that they would love to stay here. We changed a few things around so now they can, and at the same time they will be supporting the ongoing restoration of this lovely property.

Rooms are available on a B&B basis from only 99 per room per night until March. Prices after this date and further information about the home are available from, 01822 870363.
