Exmoor National Park is an idyllic haven for horse-lovers, having some of the best riding in the country with spectacular heather covered moorland, oak woodland and beautiful river valleys to explore. There are over 400 miles of well-maintained bridleways and lots of open moorland to tempt you from a sedate trot into a fast canter. In the spring Exmoor is carpeted with primroses and bluebells and the area is rich in wildlife with red deer, foxes, badgers, buzzards, hawks, herons, skylarks and kingfishers.

If you love the idea of a life on the wild open spaces of Exmoor, there are some amazing properties with superb equestrian facilities currently being sold by Knight Frank in, or on the edge of Exmoor National Park.

Beautiful Higher Thorne is situated in the heart of the Moor and is definitely my idea of the perfect rural location near the hugely popular Exmoor village of Exford, Somerset with its general store, post office and welcoming pubs. Its a delightful family home with six bedrooms and lovely reception rooms plus stables and superb views over its 107 acres of land and the surrounding countryside. Theres also a separate 4 bedroom cottage plus a tennis court, a swimming pool that can be renovated and excellent potential for a family shoot. Wonderful gardens and grounds plus small copses of woodland make this a really gorgeous Exmoor retreat.

Newland House is close by in a stunning location at Withypool, Somerset and is for the serious horse-lover with its stable block with 5 stables, tack room, outdoor manege, paddocks plus about 380 metres of fishing on the River Barle. The imposing house offers 7 bedrooms and beautifully light and airy reception rooms taking full advantage of the amazing views. I loved the large indoor swimming pool, fully attached to the house, which is flooded with natural light and has splendid views over the gardens. The nearby village of Withypool has a local shop, post office and renowned pub and nearby Dulverton is a very attractive town noted for its wide range of independent shops.

Also at Withypool, Waterhouse Farm can offer you outstanding equestrian facilities plus business potential with its stabling for up to 17 horses and a truly magnificent 48m x 22m indoor riding school. Theres well-fenced pasture and paddocks extending to around 40 acres and direct access to glorious open moorland and frontage to the River Barle. The beautifully refurbished, five bedroomed period farmhouse is believed to date back to the 1600s. In addition, Waterhouse Farm has a self contained annexe plus a separate two bedroomed cottage that could be used for holiday lets. This wonderfully, versatile property has planning permission to erect a further feed store and barn.

Southcombe Farm is a beautiful thatched farmhouse with stables, orchard, paddocks and pastureland in a wonderful rural spot close to the edge of Exmoor near Shillingford in Devon. Facing due south it enjoys uninterrupted views over unspoilt countryside. Elegantly laid out and designed, Southcombe is a treasure trove of traditional features such as exposed beams and stone fireplaces that have been cleverly combined with modern facilities such as toasty, underfloor heating in the kitchen. There are four charming bedrooms plus a self- contained annexe.

As a horse lover, any of these properties should set your imagination alight as to the possibilities of an idyllic lifestyle on enchanting Exmoor.
