It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas so grab your shopping bags and head to Plymouth Market where you will find everything you need for the perfect festive celebrations
Whether it’s a card for that special loved one, a delicious fruit cake, a unique hand-crafted gift or the finest locally-sourced food and drink, Plymouth Market has it all. And with a busy programme of festive entertainment planned for weekends in December, shoppers can look forward to a fun-filled shopping experience, with the chance to win some fantastic prizes.
While work continues on a £3.5 million makeover of the market, it is business as usual for its diverse mix of friendly, independent traders who are always happy to help shoppers find the perfect gifts. Decked in tinsel and home to a traditional Christmas wood cabin, the market offers a relaxed Christmas shopping experience, all wrapped up in good old-fashioned service. It is home to more than 140 stalls selling everything you could possibly need and more, which will be open seven days a week and late on Thursdays from December 1.
Pick up a plump, juicy turkey from the family butchers plus all the trimmings from green grocers selling fresh, local and seasonal vegetables and fruit. Head to The Nuthouse for a choice of tasty nuts and dried fruits and top up the children’s stockings with some traditional sweets from one of our classic pick and mix stalls. There’s gifts galore at bargain prices across the market, from hand-made crafts to shabby chic homeware, electronics, music, films and jewellery, not to mention toys and those all-important batteries. As temperatures plummet, shoppers can wrap up warm in fashions from winter collections on the clothing stalls, where you will also find some stunning evening wear for Christmas and New Year celebrations. There’s even a fancy dress stall to hire or buy from.
If you get tired of shopping, the market has a choice of places to eat and drink, whether you simply want to warm up with a hot cuppa and snack or sit down to a hearty lunch. Situated on the ground and mezzanine levels, the selection includes Asian cuisine from @Kitchen, which is currently rated number one on TripAdvi-sor, a wide range of traditional English dishes, sweet treats and a Taste of Thailand.
During December the market will be ho,ho, ho-sting some great family fun and entertainment. Come along on Saturday December 3 and meet the Upon a Wish princesses, listen to the great sounds of two of the Uni-versity’s fabulous bands and take part in a Silent Auction to raise funds this Christmas for the Gold Dust Ap-peal in aid of Derriford Hospital’s children’s ward, when there’s a great TV/DVD system to be won. Bring the children along on Saturday December 10 and visit Santa for the chance to win a fantastic iPad Mini, a treat for all the family.
Plymouth Market has teamed up with Radio Plymouth and over the weekend of December 17 and 18 will be giving shoppers the chance to boost their festive budgets by a whopping £10,000, by taking part in the Ra-dio Plymouth Crack the Safe Competition. Simply register with Radio Plymouth who will be in Plymouth Mar-ket on December 17 or 18 with your six-digit code for a chance to unlock the prize. This Christmas the market is also working with Derriford Hospital’s Gold Dust Appeal, which is raising money to improve the children’s wards. In return for a donation to the appeal,
shoppers can have their presents wrapped for them on Friday December 23 - what better way to save time?
Matthew Jones, Plymouth Market Manager, said: “We have a full programme of events every weekend in De-cember for all the family, young and old, to enjoy whilst you do your Christmas shopping.
“Why not pop in for a coffee or lunch at one of our tasty eateries? We’ve got plenty to choose from, what-ever your tastes. The major improvements to the market are continuing but that’s not affecting us - all our stalls are looking forward to the Christmas season and are full of Christmas cheer, the market really is the heart of local shopping in Plymouth.”
And getting to the market could not be easier, with a free Christmas land train running Wednesday to Sun-day, carrying shoppers in a loop around Plymouth City Centre - taking in Frankfort Gate, Cornwall Street, New George Street and Drake Circus. Short-stay parking for just £1 an hour is also available in the market car park.
