Devon Christmas carols: 9 of the best places to visit

Start the festive season with familiar festive songs at a cosy carol service. We have selected some of the best in Devon
BBC Radio Devon’s carol service will be coming to the beautiful 19th century Minster Church of St Andrews in Plymouth on Thursday 15th December. The service will be lead by Reverend Joe Dent, the South West Comms Brass band from Lympstone and others, so you won’t be short of entertainment during this festive evening. For this event the tickets will be distributed randomly at the start of December; to register for tickets check the website.
Newton Abbot’s Salvation Army welcomes you in for an evening full of Christmas cheer; with entertainment from the choir and classic tasty festive treats. So gather your loved ones this winter on Tuesday 13th December for a great start to the season! Entry only £2 per person from 7pm.
(•) The Parish Church of Sidmouth is going to be filled with Christmas spirit on Sunday 11th December as the carol singers mesmerise you with their heartfelt festive lyrics. Send song suggestions to Councillor Stuart Hughes (firstname.lastname@example.org) and you might hear your choice at the afternoon service which will include some youngsters from Sidmouth Primary School.
(•) The annual ‘Carols by Candlelight’ service is back and will be held at the much loved Donkey Sanctuary on Friday 9th December. The event will start at 3:30pm when staff will be lighting candles that surround the sanctuary which will then be followed by carol singers at 5pm.
(•) In the heart of the city, the grand Exeter Cathedral will be having multiple carol services (Wednesday 7th, Saturday 10th and Tuesday 13th December) all starting at 7:30pm. If you start to feel peckish, why not head to the Cathedral café where there is a pre-concert meal on offer. For ticket information head to the Exeter Cathedral website.
(•) The National Trust is hosting a carol service in Exeter on Tuesday 6th December with performances from Exeter School’s musicians. For tickets go to the National Trust website.
The Bell Ringers carol service held at this 11th century abbey on Saturday 10th December from 3pm. The event is in aid of Fostering Families and Children’s Hospice South West and will be accompanied by brass and the organ.
Also at the abbey is the Choir Carol Service on Saturday 17th December which will be in aid of the Mustard Tree and Derriford Hospital.
The village of Hartland is holding a few carol services this winter; one of which is going to be held at the Methodist Church on Sunday 18th December from 6pm. The ‘Carol around the Tree’ service will be held on Christmas Eve in Hartland Square at 7:30pm, this service will be accompanied by the Hartland Town Band.

Start the Christmas season with ‘Carols under the Stars’ at Wellington Monument, this event has been organised by Blackdown Hills AONB Partnership and the National Trust and will mark the 25th anniversary of Blackdown Hills being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. So wrap up warm and enjoy some festive carols under the night sky! Friday 2nd December from 7:30pm.
