There’s nothing quite like taking away crispy battered cod and golden chips to enjoy by Devon’s beautiful coast. With your help, we’ve picked 12 places to pick up this quintessential British treat in the county

We asked for your help picking some of the best fish and chip shops in Devon. Over 150 of you answered and it has been a tough job but we managed to whittle some of our favourites down to twelve.

1. Rockfish, Dartmouth

Seven years ago local celebrity Mitch Tonks, and close friend Mat Prowse, bought Rockfish to the coastal town of Dartmouth. Proving to be such a hit, more restaurants were opened in Brixham, Exmouth, Plymouth and Torquay. Hungry patrons can tuck into tasty Norwegian cod in a coat of light batter and perfectly cooked chips, and for those who aren’t full, extra chips are available, free of charge! Rockfish also offers gluten-free options.

2. Squires, Braunton

Enjoy a delicious takeaway from the award-winning Squires while admiring the mesmerising views from Crow Point. This North Devon gem knows a thing or two about serving up tasty fish and chips; Squires has been open since 1969 and is open daily. Treat yourself to a piece of cod blanketed in a light, crispy batter.

3.Pelican, Barnstaple

Situated in one of England’s oldest boroughs is The Pelican, an award-winning restaurant in Barnstaple. You can either sit in the restaurant or pick up a takeaway and eat it while admiring the nearby River Taw. Drop by Monday to Saturday for fish and chips; if you're still feel peckish, more chips are on the house.

4. Simply Fish, Brixham

When dining at Brixham’s Simply Fish grab a table by the window, where you can enjoy views of the spectacular harbour, in this relaxing restaurant with contemporary décor. Watch your food being cooked in the open kitchen while enjoying a drink from the licensed bar. Order a plate of fish and chips but don’t forget the mushy peas!

5. Krispies, Exmouth

You’ll find the award-winning Krispies takeaway in the quaint, seaside town on Exmouth, open 7 days a week. We love the homemade mushy peas and ‘battered chips’. Krispies' cod, plaice and haddock come from North Atlantic waters.

Fondly referred to as ‘The Shack’ by locals, Britannia @ the beach is a fish and seafood restaurant, located in the old fishing village of Beesands with scenic views over Start Bay. Open Tuesday to Sunday, diners can enjoy a generous plate of fish and chips and BYOB.

7. The Start Bay Inn, Torcross

What was originally The Fisherman’s Arms is now known as The Start Bay Inn, a 14th century, family-run seafood restaurant in Torcross. Enjoy a takeaway on the golden Slapton Sands and admire the beautiful South Devon coast. Why not order a pint of local ale to go alongside your tasty dish?

After a day of shopping locally, drop by The White Horse Café and grab a takeaway to enjoy on Sidmouth's shingle beach. Indulge in the double-cooked chips, crispy battered cod and a can of coke while admiring the beautiful Devon coast on a summer’s evening.

9. Hanbury’s, Babbacombe

Hanbury’s in Babbacombe is home to award-winning fish and chips and it's only a stone’s throw away from the beach. It is the perfect spot to admire gorgeous seaside views and even capture a stunning sunset if you visit at the right time. For over 30 years Hanbury’s has been a favourite for locals and holidaymakers alike due to its mouthwatering menu, nautical décor and vintage furnishings.
