Devon Butchers scoop top awards at South West Event

Three butchers from Devon picked up host of 'Champion' awards for their meat products at a prestigious event last week. One of the butchers also went on to be crowned the 'Overall Champion' for the South West.
Three butchers from Devon picked up host of Champion awards for their meat products at a prestigious event last week. One of the butchers also went on to be crowned the Overall Champion for the South West.
The butchers all triumphed at the first BPEX Regional Roadshow and Product Evaluation Event of the new season held in Dawlish. A total of 24 butchers from the region entered 128 products at the South West event.
The three butchers from Devon are:
- Complete Meats from Axminster
- Colyton Butchers from Colyton
- Welland Down Farm from Crediton
Complete Meats was awarded the Overall Champion title on the night, plus a special Champion of Champions award. The company also took home eight gold awards and two category champion titles for other products entered, but it was their Traditional Pork Sausage that sealed the deal with the judges and won them the Overall Champion title for the region.
Owner, Shaun Vining, said: We always spend time making sure our products are as good as they can be for the evaluations, but we put in extra effort this time round and it has obviously paid off! Having said that, we dont change the recipes for the products we submit everything that goes for evaluation is exactly the same as we sell in our shop, but we did take extra care when filling and cooking the sausages.
And were delighted that we did because to be awarded the Traditional Pork Sausage category champion title, and then the Overall Champion title, is really something special. Previously we just missed first place in the category it must be the toughest category of them all but this time we did it, and we are thrilled!
Colyton Butchers was the second highest scoring business from the region, taking home an impressive four Category Champion titles. The butcher took home awards for their Traditional Pork Pie, Quiche Lorraine, Scotch Egg and Black Pudding.
Manager, Anton Bolton, said: We have only been making our own black pudding and traditional pork pies for two weeks so we are over the moon with the results. My customers love the black pudding and were now trying to keep up with demand!
Making our own pork pies posed a challenge, but we wanted to do it properly. The combination of crisp pastry, soft home-made gelatine and quality pork is just delicious.
Welland Down Farm based in Sandford triumphed with their Cottage Pie in the Ready Meal Category. Joint owner Dodie Hunter was on hand to collect her award. She said: I make all the ready meals so Im delighted with the award.
We have five ready meals in our range along with home-made sausages, burgers; pies and pasties all using as much of our own produce as possible, including our own beef and lamb raised on our farm. The livestock is processed at the local abattoir then we finish it in our processing room.
Once all our products are ready we sell them at various local farmers markets direct to our customers. In fact, we displayed our award certificates at a market the day after the Roadshow and it helped to draw in some new customers who tried the Cottage Pie. Theyve now placed an order for more next week!
It proves that you have to innovate in this market and something as simple as a new certificate can really catch the attention of your customers. We now plan to create some stickers to go on the packaging of the Cottage Pie which we hope will help to further promote its success.
BPEX butchery and product development manager, Keith Fisher, said: The South West Roadshow had a great turn out of butchers for the first event of the season. From the 128 products entered for evaluation across 12 different categories, the judges awarded over half of them with gold awards. It just goes to show that the standard of products on sale in the South West is excellent.
We want to congratulate all of those butchers who took home awards and thank everyone for taking part. In todays climate its great to see so many independent butchers doing so well.
The Product Evaluation Events are organised by BPEX and recognise and reward product excellence and innovation among butchers. The judges use the following criteria: overall appearance; size and colour; ease of cutting; texture and structure; and most importantly taste and smell.
