Win! Sizzling steaks from Moostone Meats

On local producer Moostone Meats' farm the owners, Charlotte and Tim Jakins, love cooking steak. They love it so much that it's even been known for them to cook it out of the back of a Land Rover! Their great passion is shared by many of us around the county. Whether we're planning a barbecue for the family, hosting an impromptu dinner for friends or simply wanting to get outside and enjoy a sunny evening, little can beat the enjoyment of cooking and eating steak.
The great pleasure that comes with steak is the simplicity of cooking it. However, to get a really flavoursome cut it’s good to know the meat’s provenance. Buying from a local producer means the steak is likely to have travelled a very short distance to get to your plate. Our local producers are known for taking great pride in their animals. Tim and Charlotte, for example, rear Red Ruby beef on their farm at New Barton, just outside Wembury in South Devon. They sell their high quality, fully traceable beef in the on-site farm shop.
Commenting on choosing the best steak to cook on a barbecue, Tim says: “The cuts most suitable are rump, sirloin and ribeye. As a basic rule, steaks with a little fat marbled through the meat retain their moisture more than those without.” If you’re using a cheaper cut of steak, then it’s worth considering a marinade. As well as creating something delicious, this also helps to stop the steak drying out. A simple marinade to try making is an oriental one - a mix of soy sauce, chilli and ginger.

Wednesdays are ‘steak night’ and two Moostone Meats’ steak meals can be enjoyed for an extremely reasonable £17 (5-7pm; Moostone Meats’ pork and gammon steaks also available). Kitchen team leader at Otter Nurseries, Lesley Heal, says: “With the great quality steaks we have from Moostone Meats the preparation and cooking is really simple.”
