It’s the Devon golf course with amazing views – and you can win a round for you and 11 friends there thanks to our great competition
There can’t be many golf courses that can boast 360 degrees of fabulous views over moors and sea.
Teignmouth Golf Club though does just that; from the fairways of the outgoing half you look down on Teignmouth itself, nestling into the foot of the slope, and over the estuary of the River Teign to the Devon coast as far as Berry Head.
From the inward holes here is a view of the estuary of the Exe, and on a clear day follow the eastward coastline as far as Portland Bill. To the west is Dartmoor, rising in the far distance into the grey bastions of Hay Tor, Saddle Tor and Rippon Tor. To the north lies the hinterland of Devon and the Blackdown Hills.
Teignmouth Golf Club is justifiably proud of its location but also its heritage. The course was designed by the legendary Dr Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1924, some nine years before he completed his most famous work at the Augusta National, home of the US Masters.
The 18-hole moorland links presents a great test of golf for players of all abilities, featuring six varied and challenging par threes and no fewer than 11 two-tier greens, a true MacKenzie trademark. The clubhouse offers a place to settle in after a hard round; with a drink and a varied menu that offers joy to the hungriest of golfer to specials that change with the seasons, always giving something new and mouth-watering to try.
A major refurbishment of the clubhouse has just been completed and now the interior-designed lounge, restaurant and bar complement the views perfectly.
Teignmouth is a welcoming and friendly club that in recent years has encouraged the next generation of golfers to get involved through its junior coaching programme and adult beginners too through popular Get Into Golf and Women on Par sessions, in conjunction with England Golf.
A recent reviewer summed it up perfectly: “Teignmouth is underrated and a very good golf course. If you haven’t played it then do so immediately. If you don’t like it then you should sell your sticks and concentrate on Tiddlywinks.” (top100golfcourses.com). u
