ELEANOR YEO was having trouble finding somewhere suitable for a multi-generational break. But she soon realised that keeping things simple, can often be the best idea

Family holidays can be complicated. As children get older, expectations and costs seem to rise. Trying to please everybody can be an art form for many.

But, having booked a short break to Glebe House Cottages, near Bude, on the Devon/Cornwall border I have now found a solution to this dilemma.

From the moment we pulled into the beautiful entrance way, we knew we'd made the right decision. The six cottages are all stunning and have been recently refurbished to a very high standard. But what I hadn't banked on were the added extras; the thoughtful welcome pack (with a lovely bottle of wine) when you arrive, the stylish interiors and the oh so comfortable beds. Everything had been considered.

There really did seem to be something here for the whole family. We enjoyed the use of the heated swimming pool and the tennis court. As a family we don't even play tennis, but the court looked so inviting that by the first day, all six of us were getting in to the spirit. Rackets, as well as balls, are provided free of charge.

The kids were entertained with an adventure trail, a trampoline, and plenty of garden games and activities, as well as a good choice of board games and books available to take back to the cottage. Meanwhile, the adults enjoyed strolling through the stunning formal gardens and woodland walk and an evening drink in the summerhouse watching the sunset.

For breakfast there was a selection of warm breads and pastries to choose from at very reasonable prices. After breakfast we headed to Glebe House's nearest beach, Summerleaze in Bude, one that we'd never visited before and which was only a ten minutes' drive from our cottage.

The cottages are close to Boscastle, Hartland Bay, Clovelly and Tintagel so there are plenty of options for day trips. You're also spoilt for choice for family fun days out as Glebe's location makes it easy to get to attractions in both Devon and Cornwall.

Returning from our beach trip, we were were feeling so relaxed that we couldn't be bothered to cook. Fortunately, we were spoilt for choice with plenty of lovely pubs and restaurants within a close proximity.

We decided to eat out at the Molesworth Arms in Pyworthy and had a delicious meal with fresh ingredients, all locally sourced, only a five-minute drive from Glebe.

Our last day was lovely, sunny and warm so the children wanted to play in the pool, meaning that I was able to put my feet up, chill out on the sun lounger by the pool, read my book and relax in the glorious sunshine.

And thus, we returned to normality after three unforgettable nights away, feeling refreshed, energised and having had some genuine, quality time altogether as a family.

Our March issue competition winners were John Edwards, of Broadstone, who wins the Saunton Sands Hotel break, and Eric Cole, of Newton Abbot, who wins the Rose & Crown break.
