A Torbay serial entrepreneur has celebrated the first of two 50th wedding anniversaries that he’ll have this year.

For the past 50 years, Tony Criddle has been ‘wed’ to Bishop Fleming, Britain’s fastest growing Top 40 firm of accountants. Shortly after appointing Bishop Fleming to produce his tax returns in 1963, he married Ann, with whom he will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary later this year.

Tony first appointed Bishop Fleming in 1963 when he set up as a self-employed carpenter at the age of 20. Seven years later, he bought a mobile greengrocery business for £40 plus the cost of a van.

He then acquired Mathill Farm Dairy in Brixham, and eight years later bought Kingswear Village Stores and its associated dairy business. He sold his dairy operations in the late 1990s and bought the “Something Special” shop in Brixham, which he eventually sold in 2002 when he was 59.

Far from any thoughts of retirement, Tony, 70, used that moment to return to his first trade as a carpenter, which he continues to this day.

Tim Godfrey, Partner in Charge of Bishop Fleming’s Torquay office, said: “We are very proud to have produced all his business accounts and tax returns throughout his varied business career. Tony is an inspiring role model for today’s generation of young people.”

To mark the 50th anniversary of their working partnership, Bishop Fleming presented Tony and Ann Criddle with champagne and flowers - and dinner for two at Torquay’s Elephant restaurant to mark their forthcoming golden wedding anniversary.
