A unique online shop provides commercial and business experience to recovering Royal Marines
The Royal Marines Shop is like no other online military shop - it prides itself on providing commercial and business experience to recovering Royal Marines whilst donating its profits back to the Royal Marines Association (RMA) to support the wounded and wider corps family.
Conceived from a conversation between former Royal Marines Brigadier/CEO of the RMA Charlie Hobson, the first Royal Marines triple amputee Mark Ormrod and members of the RMA Central office team, it was agreed that whilst the wounded receive outstanding medical treatment they would benefit greatly from having a practical business to run as part of their recovery and transition into civilian life.
In 2012, with a generous donation from The Richard Hollington Trust, set up to recognise Richard Hollington - the 300th UK serviceman to die from injuries sustained in Afghanistan, the shop was launched.
It began its life as a social enterprise where experience could be gained and sought in the business world.
However, it quickly became apparent that the enterprise needed a talisman; someone to take up the challenge and run with it.
So when Charlie Hobson met Joe Lane, a former Royal Marines Captain who had been badly injured in a skiing accident, he knew he’d found such a person.
Joe had been struggling to put his life back together after his accident but Charlie recognised his drive and courage in the face of adversity and offered him the idea of making the Royal Marines Shop into a reality.
With a small dedicated team of injured service personnel, Joe built the shop into the success it is today and two years on it has many dedicated Royal Marine veterans, their wives and families who give up their time to help out – a true demonstration of the world famous Royal Marines teamwork and ethos.
A group of professionals also contribute their services in kind, and with Joe’s instinctive business acumen and tenacity the shop is in good hands.
Joe also personally believes that his focus on the shop has undoubtedly contributed to a quicker recovery for him.
In a little over two years the shop has grown from a small social enterprise to a fully-fledged, online shop, which sells a range quality unique corps-related products and it is fast becoming the preferred official supplier of Royal Marines-branded merchandise.
The team are now working closely to grow the business into a truly nationally recognised brand.
The Royal Marines Shop stocks an ever increasing range of products, and with Valentines Day not far off, would make the perfect gift. It offers adult and children’s clothing; crystal; toys; pet items, themed cards, military memorabilia and much more.
The best selling products include vintage style hoodies at £35, port for £22.50, ‘nails’ t-shirts at £15, a dog bed for £39.95 and chilli chutneys for £2.50.
Throughout the whole range the shop ensures reasonable prices for top quality goods and it prides itself on providing a great service.
