Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter shared his thoughts on managing a team at an event to launch the new Business and Professional Life magazine
The head coach of Exeter Chiefs shared some of the secrets of his management skills at an event to launch a new magazine for businesses in Devon.
Business and Professional Life is a quarterly magazine produced in Devon by Archant, publishers of Devon Life, in partnership with The Daily UK, which owns two citizen journalism websites, The Exeter Daily and The Plymouth Daily.
Guests attended a launch event at the Exeter Chiefs’ Sandy Park ground on Thursday and were able to hear Rob Baxter - who has been tipped as a future England coach - being interviewed by former Chiefs player Chris Bentley.
Talking about the challenges of managing the Chiefs he explained the theory of “No Talent Battles” arguing that it was not talent but mental determination that would make an exhausted player get up from the ground to keep playing, or give 100 per cent effort when chasing a kick.
“It doesn’t take talent to bend over and push in a scrum when you are tired, it’s a mental decision to do it. In that respect, I don’t pick the team, they do. Their actions and the way they behave determines the side.”
Businesses from across Devon attended the launch event of the magazine, which is free with Devon Life four times a year and can also be read online.
Archant commercial director Anna Atkinson said: “What is important is that this is the business community’s magazine. As well as a quality read we will also be offering people the opportunity to network with other business across the county.”
