Yachting with Devon Life

Devon’s miles of spectacular coastline dotted with welcoming harbours have long been a draw to visiting yachtsmen. In a recent series in Devon Life, we visited a number of these harbours revealing something of their history and geography, the current sailing scene and services and facilities ashore. If you are a visiting yachtsman, why not use these guides to inspire you to sail the Devon waters.Teign Spirit: One of the oldest working ports on the south coast, Teignmouth continues to trade today, and despite the commercial shipping and a tricky entrance with a bar, there is a very active sailing scene here centred on the Teign Corinthian Yacht Club.A Place of Pioneers: The waters around Plymouth, one of the biggest naval ports in Europe, is a paradise for leisure sailors with one of the finest natural harbours in the world, Plymouth Sound.Down the Dart: With its source high on Dartmoor and its lower reaches in Dartmouth, the River Dart offers a wealth of delights for yachtsmen with easy access and excellent facilities. Turn the Corner and Cruise North: For yachtsmen willing to make the effort to visit, the unspoilt North Devon coast hides some rich treasures, though this area is not for the inexperienced as there are large tidal ranges and unchecked Atlantic swells to consider.Bay of Plenty: Tor Bay has developed into one of the country’s finest watersports and sailing locations, and there’s a competitive sailing scene on this beautiful stretch of coast known as the English Riviera.
