The Theatre Royal Mezzanine Gallery, Plymouth is very pleased to present this solo exhibition of paintings by artist Martin Dutton SWAc from January 28th to April 15th 2013.

He is a foremost and much admired painter working in Devon from both local and wider sources. The Launch Party, for this Exhibition is by invitation, on February 12th 2013.
This is a Show to excite and move the viewer, to give immense pleasure and sheer celebration of the skills of the artist.
Martins paintings are multi-faceted ideas ranging over different themes (different starting points, that is, and final aims). The present exhibition brings together Four Themes that have occupied him over recent years -



  • Intuitive Abstraction

  • In-situ Landscapes

  • Dartmoor

  • Still-Life/Land or Seascape


Each individual painting has a life beyond its making, and exudes a visual lyricism which engages the individual viewer.
Martins paintings are characterized by his painterly flair, colour, vibrancy and narrativeand by his varied and changing creative and intuitive responses to his subject.
His work communicates a personal pictorial language into which the viewer is invited to participate.
Martin uses inventive varied techniques in his use of oils, seduces with his mastery of colour, and intrigues with his imagery and narrative even into his titles and commentary! He employs the use of distorted perspective to flatten his pictorial space which draws the viewer inthen to delight in sumptuous landscape and rich poignant visual imagery of his Still-life. His sense of geometry almost involuntarily emerges to provide substance for his very free jewel-like Abstractions. And who could miss the menace, drama and narrative created in the Dartmoor Theme.
The paintings in this Show depict a personal response to the light and colour of the natural world and also to deeper meanings and references which unfold as our imagination is carried into the image.


This is a substantial show well worth visiting, and is accompanied by a fine Catalogue which includes responses from the collectors of Martins paintings.
