The leading holiday letting specialist has just announced a new writing and photography awards scheme for Devon children

This September sees the launch of Young Creatives 2015 - a new writing and photography awards scheme created by leading holiday letting specialist, holidaycottages.co.uk.

Recent statistics show that less than 13% of children read while on holiday, and with fewer children going out to explore their local areas, the company wanted to work with local schools to encourage creativity in our younger generation.

Working with Devon Libraries, holidaycottages.co.uk aims to encourage children to explore the place they live and to discover what these areas have to offer. The Devon-based business has partnered with HarperCollins Publishers, Argos, TRUPRINT and stayindevon.co.uk, who are all helping to support the scheme.

The awards are unique in that at the end of the competition, along with a number of prizes, the two older age group winners will be invited to attend a work experience placement at the holidaycottages.co.uk offices in Bideford during the summer holidays in 2015.

The winners and 60 finalists will also have their work included in a ‘Kids Guide to Devon’ eBook, which will be released next year.

James Morris, Managing Director said:

“With large numbers of young children living in the South West, but never having seen the coast or the moors, we wanted to put a plan into action to change this. We have such a beautiful landscape in the South West and add the creativity of children and you have a great combination.

“The entrants will be judged on a number of factors in their age groups, not just the quality of the writing or the photographs, but the creativity of the content and the effort that has been put into the entry will also be taken into account.”

Young Creatives is now open until Friday 27 March 2015, allowing schools and their students two academic terms to enter the awards. Entrants need to produce a short piece of writing or a photograph with a focus on their favourite place in Devon and will be judged in three age groups: 5-7 year olds, 7-11 year olds and 11-16 year olds.
