Every writer needs space. A place away from work, chores, family and other distractions. Deep in the heart of the beautiful North Devon countryside, that space is waiting for you.

On Saturday 18 October, Retreats for You, a beautiful writer’s retreat in the picturesque village of Sheepwash in North Devon, is holding the first of what is hoped to be regular day-long writing workshops, led by novelist Susannah Waters and entitled...WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

This one-day course will explore different strategies for creating structure in a novel. It will concentrate on planning the key scenes in a story, building a strong backbone that will make it easier to fill in the scenes between.

It will go over traditional plot templates, investigating the development of both character and action based plots and identifying the common pitfalls in stories that go nowhere. It will also be looking at the function of sub-plots and the all-important choice of point of view.

The day, which will cost £95 and run from 10am until 4.30pm, will include writing exercises and lots of information to take home, plus a hearty vegetarian lunch and tea, coffee, herbal tea, banana bread and flapjacks at appropriate intervals.

Deborah Dooley, who runs Retreats for You, worked as a freelance journalist, columnist and writer for over 25 years.
