The biggest weekend in South Molton’s busy calendar begins on Thursday 4 December and runs through to Monday 8 December, when the town is busy hosting a number of events which together make up its Big Christmas Weekend.
The first of the town’s events is the Christmas Tree Festival, which is held in St Mary Magdalene’s parish church, just off the town’s square, each day from Thursday 4 until Monday 8 December.
Opening hours are 10.00am – 4.00pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday, extended to 9.00pm on Friday to coincide with the late night shopping event, and Sunday 12.00 – 4.00pm.
The trees, representing many different community groups and organisations are on display and decorated appropriately, whether that means shuttlecocks for the badminton club or sweets from the local sweet shop! Each is a work of art in itself, but when they come together in the church, they create a magical Christmas experience.
Last year there were 65 trees exhibited, representing the many groups and organisations which thrive in the town, including schools, businesses and activities organisations. This saw more than 2,000 visitors flocking to the event, which grows year on year.
Margaret White is one of the volunteers involved in staging the event. She says: “This will be our fourth year of running the Christmas Tree Festival, and it is always a delight to see so many beautiful and originally decorated trees displayed throughout the church. It is also a lovely way of uniting the South Molton community at this very special time of year.”
Other events making up South Molton’s Big Christmas Festival include Friday’s late night shopping event, South Molton’s Circuit Choir’s ‘Welcome to Christmas Concert’ in the Assembly Rooms, the Fatstock Show in the Pannier Market on Sunday, followed by The Military Wives Choir that evening.
