5 things to do in Devon this weekend

The weekend is fast approaching and for those still deciding how to spend their Friday through to Sunday, we pick 5 of the best ways to spend your weekend in Devon
Shaldon Regatta – August 19 – 27
It may be smaller than Dartmouth, but Shaldon Regatta Association is older - founded in 1817 and celebrating its 200th anniversary last year. What started as a one-day meeting now runs over nine days with over 120 events on and by the water.
Shaldon Regatta is for everyone, say the organisers. They award the Charles Hulbert Trophy, Clearance Cup and De Vey Jubilee Trophy to young people in different age groups who, in the opinion of the Committee, have put up the best overall performances throughout the regatta. Pretty Shaldon also offers plenty of opportunities for people to watch the action on the river.
Clovelly Gig Regatta – August 18
Many of Devon’s best teams will be racing this weekend in the challenging tidal waters off North Devon. From the shore you’ll be able to see crews get up to a speed of around nine knots in traditional vessels that have barely changed during gig racing’s centuries-old history.
Normal admission charges to the area apply.
Devon Fire & Spice Festival at Powderham Castle – August 18 – 19
Those with a taste for flame-grilled food and all-things spicy will want to head to the gorgeous Powderham Castle this Saturday and Sunday. There will be dozens of visiting chilli sauce traders, BBQ demonstrations and competitions, talks, street food and lots of other food offerings for those with milder palates.
Adult tickets are £5.90 in advance or £7.50 on the gate. 11 to 15-year-olds are £2.50 in advance or £3 on the gate.
Alice in Wonderland at Exeter Barnfield Theatre – August 18 – 19
You might think panto is something reserved solely for the Christmas period but not this summer as Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale comes to Exeter’s Barnfield Theatre. The show will combine incredibly fun set pieces with stunning scenery and colourful costumes to delight both children and adults.
The shows start at 2pm each day. Tickets are £14 for adults and £11 for children.
A local estate agent will be at the event to give expert advice and the Redrow sales team will also be on hand to discuss moving processes and any queries visitors may have about buying a Redrow home. The one-day event is being held as part of Redrow’s ongoing commitment to creating thriving communities and providing potential homebuyers with a bespoke and personal experience.
On the day, visitors will be able to explore behind the doors of two homes from Redrow’s Heritage Collection which take their design inspiration from the soft colour palettes and traditional structures of the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1920s. It runs from 11am to 3pm.
