West Somerset businesses Louise Crossman Architects and I N Chappel Building and Civil Engineering Contractors were delighted to win the awards for Best Commercial Building in the recent Somerset West LABC Building Excellence Awards. The awards were given in recognition of the high standard of design, construction and workmanship of the new factory building at Singer Instruments in Roadwater, beating several other nominations including the new Morrisons distribution centre in Bridgwater. A number of other local architectural practices and contractors were also commended in other categories.

Singer Instruments designs and manufacture robotics for use in cancer and biofuels research, which they export to over 60 countries across the globe. The building was designed to support the growth of the business, providing additional office space and a purpose-built room for research, development and assembly of their precision instruments.

Louise Crossman commented that As the building is within Exmoor National Park, it was an interesting challenge to design an extension to the existing factory which both reflected its state of the art operation, and was also within the conventions of traditional building design usually promoted within the Park, and we were therefore pleased that Exmoor National Park Authority supported the approach followed.

Harry Singer, Managing Director of Singer Instruments commented Thanks very much to Exmoor National Park and the local Roadwater community for their continued support. Were very grateful to be able to expand into such a fantastically designed and constructed facility and proud to provide more jobs and training for local people.

Ian Chappel said Having acted as Principal Contractor for Singer Instruments' previous factory expansion ten years previously, it was an honour to be asked by a truly world-class business to return and construct this latest phase. I wish them all the very best for the future.

Covering Sedgemoor, Taunton Deane and West Somerset, the Somerset West LABC (Local Area Building Control) Building Excellence Awards recognise and reward the most forward looking people and organisations, and the most innovative construction projects completed each year. Winners are put through to regional finals which have yet to be held.
