RICS visits St Austell's Cornwall Hotel and Spa to present prestigious award

Senior members of RICS visited the Cornwall Hotel and Spa in St Austell this week to present the South West 2011 Regeneration Award to the team responsible for its restoration and conversion.

Senior members of RICS visited the Cornwall Hotel and Spa in St Austell this week to present the South West 2011 Regeneration Award to the team responsible for its restoration and conversion.

The winning announcement was made at the beginning of May and the visit provided the opportunity both to celebrate and present the Award which recognises the projects success in sensitively converting a dilapidated Regency house into a 65 bed boutique 4 star hotel.

The designs sensitively respond to the historic setting and natural beauty of the area, with key elements including restoration of original features such as windows with shutters, ceiling cornices and marble and slate fireplaces. Where elements needed to be replaced they have been recreated in the original style. Mechanical and electrical services have been cleverly hidden within the existing fabric of the building and new standards of comfort and safety have been added without injury to the original building.

An associated Clearing Spa is located in a converted Victorian stable yard, carriage house and stables. Clusters of lodges are arranged in an open space within the 43 acre parklands, capitalising on the central hotel facilities and the surrounding mature woodlands.

The project now goes forward to compete in the RICS international awards where it will be judged alongside other projects not just from around the country but around the world. Winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held at the Savoy Hotel in London on 21 October.
