Mill on the Exe

Archant

Enjoy this summer even more with a pint to hand at one of these Exeter pubs...

Mill on the Exe

Situated on the beautiful River Exe is Mill on the Exe, a two-storey pub with beamed ceilings and a waterside garden overlooking Blackaller Weir and Millstone footbridge. After a morning of shopping in the centre treat yourself to a much-deserved glass of wine while soaking in the sun from the terrace. The pub used to form part of the paper mill until the 1960s and then was taken over by St Austell Brewery and turned into this delightful pub in 1994. Tuck into venison sausages alongside bubble and squeak and onion gravy with your much-deserved pint of Tribute Ale while absorbing the breathtaking riverside views.

Double Locks

Waterside views and a friendly atmosphere are what make the Double Locks a go to pub for you and your pet pooch. We recommend the twist on sausage and mash or the mouth-watering Sunday lunch all washed down with a couple of pints of real ale on the picturesque canal. Join them for a lively weekend on August Bank Holiday for the Cider and Sausage Festival where you’ll be spoilt for choice with over 50 ciders of all wonderful flavours – they even have chocolate flavour!

The Farmer’s Union

Just a little out of the city centre you will find The Farmer’s Union, a dog friendly bar with a range of great local ales to choose from. While you are enjoying an adult catch-up over a few pints with friends let the kids run free in the outdoor play area. We recommend that you try the flaked salmon salad with a glass of white wine on a quiet summer’s eve or perhaps you need a night out with the girls so why not stop by for a couple of cocktails and a gossip?

The Port Royal

Whilst walking along the quay on a beautiful summer’s day with your four-legged friend, stop by for a pint and delicious food while admiring the view over the River Exe. Try the delicious mussels cooked in a creamy garlic with white wine sauce and perhaps join in with their lively quiz nights every Thursday.

The Royal Oak

Located in the hamlet of Nadderwater is The Royal Oak, a classic country pub; a perfect place to stop off on your way out of the city centre. This family-run pub is dog-friendly so feel free to bring your pooch along for a pint among the picturesque rolling hills. When the weather is warmer head to The Garden Shed where a variety of toys are kept to keep your little ones entertained for hours! Tuck into the Cottage Pie with vegetables and gravy and for afters why not treat yourself to lemon sponge and custard?

On the Waterfront

Calling all foodies! On the Waterfront, a 19th century former docking warehouse, offers a menu brimming with sumptuous dishes perfect for intimate dining or a group gathering. In the warmer months, admire the views extending out across The River Exe from the pub’s heated terrace with a pint in hand.

The Old Fire House

On a warm day drop by the Old Firehouse and enjoy a tipple or two with friends as you soak in the sun from the picturesque courtyard. Tuck into the three bean chilli with rice and fresh salad garnish or the pulled pork burger alongside a pint of Otter Ale or a glass of Zinfandel Rose. The courtyard is decorated with buntings, making for a cosy evening with friends where you can relax and enjoy live music with a pint of ale or cider.

Although this is technically not a pub, we had to include...

City Gate

Situated in the heart of Exeter is the City Gate hotel, the perfect place to drop by for a spot of lunch and try the open steak sandwich alongside a glass of Featherdrop Bay Sauvignon Blanc.

Why not pop along for a night of fun with the much-loved Tuesday quiz nights? Or relish the last day of the weekend before heading back to work on Monday with the live music sessions every Sunday.
