Crediton Community Bookshop is looking for support from Devon readers

A Devon bookshop staffed largely by volunteers has reached the regional finals of the Independent Bookshop Of The Year Awards.

Crediton Community Bookshop is through to the final five in the South West category. It was judged on different aspects of the business including community outreach, innovation and marketing initiatives, customer service and the unique range of books stocked. The British Book Awards is the definitive event for honouring the successes of publishers, authors and bookshops.

At a time when bookshops face so much competition from internet book sales and advances in technology, and when many high streets are struggling, Crediton Community Bookshop is bucking the trend.

Manager Dee Lalljee says: “We’re delighted to have reached this stage. Since the community saved the book shop from closure in 2013, we’ve gone from strength to strength, last year moving to a larger site on Crediton High Street and holding events like a Michael Morpurgo meet and greet, a stand-up poetry evening with Matt Harvey and a weekly Story and Rhyme session for younger children.

“Events planned for this year include a series of Lates At The Bookshop, an event celebrating local authors and writing workshops.”

Crediton Community Bookshop runs a pop-up bookshop at literary festivals and events like Exeter’s Exetreme Imagination and Chagword later this month and for local organisations including Crediton Children’s Centre’s Booktrust In The Park event.’

Dee says: “Our team is made up largely of volunteers who each bring their unique skills to the bookshop, from helping customers choose books to building our website or running events. We have a dedicated schools team who arrange for authors to visit schools, hold book fairs and read to children.”

You can support Crediton Community Bookshop’s chances of winning the heat and going on to compete for the national prize by telling The British Book Awards why you like the shop via the online form http://www.thebookseller.com/british-book-awards/your-favourite-independent-bookshop.

The online form is open until 9 March and winners announced on 15 March.
