No one ever needs an excuse to indulge in a succulent beef patty with all the trimmings. In no particular order, we pick 10 of the best places in Devon for tasty burgers
It began in a humble shipping container, now Hubbox serves American street food-inspired burgers in restaurants all over the South West. At Hubbox, diners can expect industrial-chic design interiors with concrete floors and corrugated iron walls; a trendy and modern setting for you to enjoy one of their award-winning burgers.
A firm favourite on the menu is the Big Kahuna, which contains two 4oz beef patties, barbecue pulled pork, Swiss cheese, barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, salad and onion rings. Up for a challenge? Upgrade the Big Kahuna to extra large for an additional £3.45 – just make sure you’re wearing your stretchy trousers.
Bull & Bear in Barnstaple is the go-to place to enjoy craft beers and meaty gourmet burgers. Half the fun here is simply ordering as there are plenty of creative burgers on the menu featuring funky names such as the ‘Fatt Matt’ (a double cheese burger with streaky bacon), the ‘Texas Pete’ topped with homemade chilli, nachos and sour cream, and the ‘El Diablo’ complete with spicy mayo, pickled chillies and cheese and chilli bites – to name just a few. Bull & Bear has a varied selection of meat-free burgers to choose from too.
Don’t forget to leave room for dessert as there is an array of mouth-watering options to choose from. We like the sound of the Bull & Bear ice cream sundae with raspberry sauce and chocolate brownie. The diet can start on Monday.
As the name suggests, this is a restaurant created by, and intended for meat lovers. The beef and pork used in their street-food inspired, hand-pressed burgers is local, as is the buns that each burger is encased in. A popular choice on the menu, which took home ‘Best Dish’ at Nourish Festival in 2016, is the Truffle Shuffle: a 6oz burger patty with wild mushrooms, spinach, caramelised red onion and truffle mayo.
We can’t talk about the burgers at Meat59 without mentioning the delicious sides and dips to go with them. The ‘Filthy Fries’ are topped with slow roast BBQ Devon pulled pork and cheese, and the ‘Dirty Fries’ are smothered in beef chilli and jalapenos. We’ll leave the difficult decision of which side to have, up to you.
Ruby Kitchen has teamed up with The Grapevine in Exmouth to bring you some of the best burgers in South Devon to accompany your beer. Pubs are always a winning setting for eating a burger and this place is no exception, however takeaway is available until late if the restaurant is full.
With so many burgers to choose from, Ruby has taken the difficulty out of choosing what to have by creating the slider: three half-sized burgers with a side of fries, house coleslaw and a dill pickle slice. We like the Bad Man burger, slurped down with a Malt & Marple Five Dollar shake.
The name of our next choice will make complete sense once you visit it. Pig and Pallet is a restaurant entirely given over to the butchering, barbecue, curing and cooking of meat – and its interior is made almost entirely out of wood. It is quirky and fun with an extensive menu, including a diverse list of burgers such as ‘The Wild Dartmoor Venison Burger’, which is served with the Pig and Pallet’s homemade cured bacon, salad, pickles and chimichurri. There is something for everyone, including gluten-free buns and fries.
UrbanBurger, which has been family owned and run since 2012, is Exeter’s original burger restaurant. From the butchers to the bakers, even the greengrocers; all ingredients are locally sourced in Devon and freshly cooked. 95% of the menu is made in-house, so expect homemade burgers, chips, dips and desserts.
There’s over 18 burgers on the menu to sate the appetite of any patty aficionado - and that’s not including the specials board. All burgers are served with a choice of a brioche bun, gluten-free bun or bunless with extra salad (so you can enjoy your burger guilt-free). ‘The Couch Potato’ burger with bacon, onion rings, hash browns and a fried egg usually gets our taste buds tingling.
If you’re feeling brave, UrbanBurger has one of the most infamous ‘Man VS Food’ challenges in the county. If you manage to get through seven 6oz burgers, 14 pieces of bacon, seven slices of cheese served in one burger bun with two portions of double fries on the side in 20 minutes or less, you’ll get the £29.95 dish for free, an Urban Burger t-shirt and a proud place on the restaurant’s leader board.
If you have been to Princesshay recently, you can’t have missed the large yellow letters declaring ‘Byron’. This American-diner inspired burger bistro is renowned for its ‘proper hamburgers’. Its interior, like its sign, is eye catching and the style is that of an upmarket American diner, complete with comfy booths and retro furniture.
If hamburgers aren’t your thing, there is also veggie or chicken burgers, like the C-Rex: fried chicken topped with onion rings, streaky bacon, American cheese, jalapenos, pickles, onion, barbecue sauce and mayonnaise.
Latin American chain Las Iguanas is perhaps not the first place you would think of visiting for a succulent patty, but it was recently announced as the 2017 winner of the National Burger Awards with the Buenos Aires burger, a 50% short rib and 50% chuck mince beef patty with Provaleta cheese, grilled smoky chorizo, caramelised onions, chimichurri and aioli.
Their bright, colourful restaurants can be found all over the country, including sites in Plymouth, Exeter and Torquay.
Also worth mentioning…
The Pig has two burgers to choose from on the menu. The signature ‘Pig burger’ marries pulled pork, bacon and a beef burger with gem lettuce, tomato, mustard mayo, apple jam and crispy onions. Whilst vegetarians can indulge in a chickpea and corn patty with pepper, beetroot and feta salsa – not just your ordinary veggie burger!
A delicious alternative to the usual seafood dishes is the fried soft shell crab burger with hot and sweet chilli sauce, served with jalapeno slaw. On the main menu, you’ll also find the halloumi burger with fresh mint and oregano yoghurt, and the chicken, bacon and Caesar burger served in a soft brioche bun. Rockfish can also be found in Dartmouth, Exeter, Exmouth, Plymouth and Torquay but this one’s our favourite – purely for the sea view!
