THREE students from a North Devon school have made it through to the finals of a prestigious national chemistry competition

Patrick Wellar, Owain Hughes and Isaac Martin, all Year 12 students at The Ilfracombe Academy, took part in The Schools’ Analyst Competition run by the Royal Society of Chemistry Analytical Division.

They were required to undertake various practical analytical determinations based on problems relevant to industrial or social needs. These were judged for skill, understanding and accuracy, promoting team work and safety in the laboratory.

The students threw themselves into the competition, emerging victorious as the Western Region winners and have now been invited to compete in the national final in June 2014, where around 20 teams will compete for a Challenge Shield.

First, Second and Third placed teams in the National Final receive prizes of £1,000, £600 and £300 respectively with the other finalists receiving £100 each.

Head teacher, Sharon Marshall, says: “I am absolutely delighted that the team did so well, this is an extremely prestigious competition and we are all very proud of Owain, Isaac and Patrick. The boys performed so well in the competition showing academic ability as well as teamwork and I am sure they have great futures ahead of them.

“Their success will enhance the Academy’s reputation for excellence in the Sciences and it is hoped will encourage other students to take up STEM subjects at A level,” she adds.
