This month’s Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink is a feast of activity for foodies
Final preparations are underway for the Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink which takes place at the end of this month, and we’ve got a competition to help you get in the mood for what’s to come.
More than 100 producers will be at this year’s event, along with some of the region’s most celebrated and well known chefs. It runs from Saturday 29 April to Monday 1 May and, along with the daytime food and drink-based activities, there’s three nights of musical entertainment, beginning on Friday 28 April.
Festival top five:
1 Chef demos:
Surely one of the absolute highlights is the chance to see top regional chefs including Michael Caines MBE taking to the stage to wow with their culinary skills. Front row seats go fast so make a beeline to Northernhay Gardens on your arrival.
2 Family Festival:
One of the aims of the festival is to inspire children to cook and find out more about where their food comes from. Book a space at one of the many free workshops to get hands on and have fun in the kitchen.
A hundred of them will fill the marquees in Northernhay Gardens. Stock up on new and innovative products as well as traditional delicacies.
4 Live performance:
There’s so much live music at the festival that it’s grown to become a series of events in its own right. The After Dark Music Festival takes place over three evenings from Friday 28 April with its street food stalls, local drinks and a fabulous party atmosphere.
5 Have a go:
The three days are packed with tasting sessions and Q&A sessions about food, drink and even growing your own. It’s also a great opportunity to chat to the producers on their stands about provenance, ingredients and how to cook with their products.
The festival organisers have teamed up with Devon Hotels & Restaurants Association to offer Devon Life readers the chance to win two tickets to Bank Holiday Monday at the Festival and lunch at The Pig at Combe.
Famed for its beautiful Elizabethan building surrounded by restored kitchen gardens, The Pig at Combe in the village of Gittisham sources its produce locally and uses many ingredients from its garden. The winner will be treated to a three course seasonal lunch for two, including a bottle of PIG HUT house wine followed by a tour of the kitchen gardens with one of the resident gardeners, who will talk them through the garden to fork philosophy that The Pig hotels have become well known for.
