Devon Life is partnering with Exeter and the Heart of Devon Hotels & Restaurants Association in a year-long celebration of the best of the county’s accommodation. This month we focus on Topsham

The Salutation Inn at TopshamThe Salutation Inn at Topsham

Situated on the Exe Estuary, Topsham was once a major port and shipbuilding centre heavily involved in trade across the world.

Today the river remains a strong focus, and added to that are all kinds of other charms, making Topsham one of the most sought-after postcodes in Devon.

An ancient port at the head of the Exe Estuary, Topsham is vibrant with its interesting architecture and small streets, riverside quay and walkways.

The Vikings, the Romans and many other visitors have chosen Topsham as the perfect stopping off place.

Topsham has its own railway station, bus routes and Marina and is on the amazing Exe Cycle trail. It is also located just six miles from Exeter International Airport and two miles from Junction 30 on the M5. Famous for its RSPB Bird Reserve, the museum, and with lots to do and explore, it’s no surprise that Topsham is popular with locals and visitors alike - it was even voted by The Sunday Times as the sixth best place to live in the south.

Whatever your pastime, whether it is sailing, fishing, cycling, watersports, rugby, swimming, bowling, motor boats or walking, there is plenty to do to keep you occupied.

The quaint historic estuary port of Topsham has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with an eclectic cluster of specialist shops and fine restaurants, plus wonderful sunsets above the estuary.

Topsham shopping also offers a vibrant mix of boutiques, galleries, gifts, fine wines and foods, and antiques; you really will be charmed by the offerings to be found in this historic town.

Good food is a Topsham speciality with many historic pubs, and award-winning restaurants including:

The Globe 16th Century Coaching Inn

As its name suggests, The Globe is a characterful 16th century coaching inn situated right in the heart of Topsham.

It has an extensive menu accompanied by specials which change daily.

Decorated with rich textures and colours, the relaxing interiors at the Globe Inn ooze character - sit back, relax and enjoy specialty coffees, fine wine and award winning ales. Enticing menus have an emphasis on local Devon and Westcountry produce to make the most of fresh ingredients.

The Salutation Inn

The Salutation Inn has established an excellent reputation for their tasting menus, which are created using some of the finest ingredients from local producers such as Greendale Farm, Celtic Sea Fare, Ritters, Richards and Country Cheeses.
