Devon Life is joining forces with Doctor Inks Curiosities cocktail bar in Exeter and Salcombe Distilling Co. to launch a competition to create a very special Devon drink

We’re on a mission to find two cocktails for Devon, two drinks which not only use Devon-based ingredients, but also evoke the spirit of the county.

Inspiration for the drinks may come from individuals, places, Devon’s history or the landscape itself. From coastline to moorland, country lanes and cities, this is a rich county with a varied and complex landscape and character.

We are inviting cocktail enthusiasts and professional bartenders to distil that character into two gin-based cocktails in our competition called, The Spirit of Devon 2017. The amateurs will create a single cocktail (two servings) and the professionals will need to create a multi serve cocktail, or punch.

From strawberries to seaweed and chillis to chocolate and coffee, we want to see drinks creators scour the county in search of ingredients that may have been foraged, grown or made here, the more Devon links there are in the drinks, the better.

The back story to the cocktails is also important, entrants will need to show the imaginative and creative thinking behind their cocktail, but also create a narrative that shows a depth of knowledge and love of the county.

The final will be held at Salcombe Gin Distillery on Sunday, 26 November where five finalists from each category will each have five minutes to make their drinks in front of a panel of judges and members of the public.

Marks will be allocated according to the drink itself (taste, aroma, appearance, originality - totalling 40%); knowledge (local ingredients, brand knowledge, inspiration and sticking to brief - 40%) and presentation (theatre and entertainment, speed of timekeeping - 20%).

Judges

The judging panel will be Patrick Fogarty, bartender and co-owner of Doctor Inks Curiosities; Angus Lugsdin, director and co-founder of Salcombe Distilling Co.; Mark Diacono, food writer, grower, founder of Otter Farm and ex River Cottage environmental consultant; Dartington Crystal commercial director Richard Halliday and Catherine Courtenay, Devon Life food and drink editor.

Prizes

The amateur winner will receive a ticket to a Gin School experience at Salcombe Distilling Co.; a set of Dartington Crystal cocktail glasses; a gift box of Otter Farm drinks and a masterclass at Doctor Inks Curiosities. Their cocktail will also be listed at Doctor Inks and be included in its special edition menu book.

The professional winner will receive a ticket to a Gin School experience, a Dartington Crystal Lynton bowl and they will be profiled in Devon Life.

All ten finalists will receive a bottle of Salcombe Gin
