Leading luxury operator the Eden Hotel Collection has embarked on a £2 million refurbishment of Bovey Castle, less than six months after acquiring the award-winning country house estate in Dartmoor National Park.

The investment is the first phase of the Eden Hotel Collection’s renovation programme to restore Bovey Castle to its former glory. The estate includes a 64-bedroom hotel, 18-hole championship golf course, spa, country lodges and an outdoor pursuits centre.

The privately-owned Eden Hotel Collection, which is the AA’s Small Hotel Group of the Year 2014-15, is spending an initial £700,000 on restoration work to the hotel while a further phase one of investment totalling £1.3 million is being ploughed into transforming the restaurant, brasserie and public rooms on the ground floor. All the work is due to be completed by Easter.

The Edwardian Restaurant will be renamed the Great Western Restaurant, as a tribute to the glorious Great Western Railway – the first owners to open Bovey Castle as a golfing hotel in 1930. The Castle Bistro will become Smith’s Brasserie, in honour of one-time owner and pioneering 19th Century entrepreneur WH Smith.

New menus are being developed under the direction of Eden’s Food and Beverage Director, multi-award-winning chef Simon Haigh.

The Eden Hotel Collection’s Managing Director, Mark Chambers, says: “With its rich history and heritage, Bovey Castle has long been regarded as the jewel in the crown of the leisure industry in the South West.

“As the new guardians of the hotel, we are celebrating this glorious past with a breathtaking transformation of our restaurants, introducing an amazing new dining experience which will be unrivalled anywhere in the region. We are very excited to be unveiling this new concept and we are looking forward to sharing this with our guests,” he adds.
