Enjoy the beautiful vistas and rolling landscapes from some of Devon’s best eateries, we pick 11 of best places to dine al fresco in Devon

Blacksands Bistro, Ilfracombe

The North Devon gem of Ilfracombe is home to the family run Blacksand Bistro. Soak in the sun on the garden terrace and tuck into a delicious home cooked meal and to finish off treat yourself to a delicious lemon parfait alongside a cocktail – yum! On those colder evenings they set the chiminea alit so you’ll still be able to enjoy a romantic evening outdoors.

TJ’s Restaurant, Paignton

Situated in South Devon is TJ’s Restaurant by the Harbour; the perfect location to watch the sunset over Paignton Harbour. Enjoy tapas style dishes or even try the ‘tapas banquet’ between friends if you fancy sharing a few different plates. The terrace is the perfect spot to relax after your meal; soak in the views over a refreshing beer or jug of sangria.

Crab Shack, Teignmouth

For a perfect post-surf hangout, look no further than The Crab Shack. It prides itself on its hard-working team and great variety of seafood. We recommend that you try the something off of the ‘catch of the day’ menu, which can be enjoyed out on the terrace with a glass of wine overlooking the sea.

The Pier House, Westward Ho!

Overlooking Bideford Bay and Lundy Island is The Pier House in Westward Ho!, a stylish, seafront bar and bistro ideal for a romantic evening out. While soaking in the sun on the terrace, try dishes such as the duck salad or roasted butternut risotto with a glass of wine in hand.

The Ness, Shaldon

On the outskirts of Shaldon village is The Ness, a 19th century Georgian restaurant overlooking the Teign Estuary. Bring your pooch along and enjoy some gorgeous beachside views while tucking into some tasty food! Why not start with a classic, prawn cocktail and then dig into a delicious slow-braised chicken with ham alongside a pint of Fursty Ferret. If you have the room treat yourself to a cherry pie with custard after.

Appleby’s, Torquay

Wake up early and admire the beautiful morning views over Torbay with a hearty breakfast at Appleby’s. Available from 7.30am Monday to Saturday, and 8am on a Sunday, perhaps try American pancakes or a Full English breakfast. Take a seat on the terrace and relax while you gaze at the picturesque view of Torre Abbey Sands.

Double Locks, Exeter

Waterside views and a friendly atmosphere are what make the Double Locks a go to pub for you and your four-legged friend. For those feeling hungry, dishes such as the homemade olive spinach and tomato risotto or a tub of ice cream to satisfy a sweet tooth are perfect to sample in the beer garden. Always a fun-filled day, why not visit the Double Locks for their Cider and Sausage festival on the 25th-27th August for tasty food and live music.

The Boat House, Dawlish Warren

After a cycle or walk along the coast, pop by The Boat House for delicious food and drink. On a sunny day, grab a table on the balcony upstairs or in the beer garden downstairs where you can enjoy tasty dishes including salmon and crab parcels or The Boat House’s twist on ham, egg and chips.

The Golden Lion Inn, Tipton St John

This inn is the perfect countryside venue for a pint and food with friends. Retreat to the beer garden and soak in the sun while tucking into a Sunday roast in the sun and finish with the lemon brioche pudding in the cosy village of Tipton St John.

Nestled in the charming village of Tipton St John, The Golden Lion Inn is the perfect countryside venue for a relaxed day of eating and drinking with friends. Retreat to the beer garden and soak in the sun – we recommend a roaster dinner followed by a lemon brioche pudding if you’re there on Sunday!

The Miners Arms, Plympton

Located in countryside village of Hemerdon is a 17th century pub and restaurant of The Miners Arms. Order a pint of the Tungsten Tipple, the Miners Arms own exclusive ale brewed by Dartmoor Brewery, while enjoying the rolling landscapes that surround the pub.

The Five Bells Inn, Clyst Hydon

Winner of Best Gastro Pub of the YeFar at the Devon Life Food & Drink Awards 2016, the 16th century thatched inn boasts a beautiful beer garden. Take your dog along too and you can both enjoy mesmerising views of the countryside. The menu is extensive; we love the sound of the Dartmoor Dexter Cottage Pie followed by a delicious dark chocolate mousse al fresco.
